5 Tips for Remodeling Your Kitchen Cabinets on a Budget

These days, planning for new kitchen cabinets shouldn’t require a trip to the bank and a home equity loan. Quality cabinets are available at a reasonable price to prudent buyers. Follow these tips if you want to update your cooking space without breaking the bank.

Proactive Planning

The best way to control costs when updating your kitchen is to plan and budget accordingly. Identify all of your needs and limitations early-on and work with a licensed & bonded contractor to ensure that you get a full understanding of the road ahead. Unexpected plumbing, electrical, engineering or mold issues have the potential to blow the scope of your project into the stratosphere. You want to stick to a plan and have contingencies identified from the start so you don’t run out of money mid-way through.

Focus on Cabinet Durability

When buying kitchen cabinets you should look past the hardware upgrades and novel applications if you are looking to save some extra dollars. Spend your money on durable cabinet materials that will stand the test of time. Many reasonably-priced cabinets are made of solid hardwoods or laminates that have the look and feel of more-expensive, custom-made cabinets.

Affordable Appliances

There are many ways to save on appliances without compromising on style. Many appliance makers have product lines that balance economy and luxury. First, you should consider kitchen cabinets that compliment appliances with basic colors. Black, white and ivory can still have a high-end feel if complimented with the right surroundings. If you are set on creating that industrial look, you can also find appliances that only have stainless steel fronts or are coated with a stainless metallic paint. Ultimately, you will find your best value in scratch and dent appliances. Retailers often mark down S&D appliances hundreds if not thousands of dollars for aesthetic flaws that are many times not even visible at first glance.

Dramatic Lighting

Your kitchen lighting plan should be just as important as your cabinet layout.  Proper lighting can highlight your kitchen’s most valuable features and increase the functionality of your cooking space.  Look into lighting temperatures that compliment your choice of cabinet materials, colors and room size. For instance, LED or halogen lighting paired with glossy white cabinets can open up and enlarge a small kitchen space. Or you may prefer to set a more comfortable mood with well-placed incandescent lights that will compliment the warmth of traditional wood cabinets.

Innovate Your Storage

Not everything in your kitchen needs to be behind closed doors. Your pots, pans, appliances and dishes can be visually pleasing if you plan your open storage spaces properly.  Hanging pot racks, industrial prep tables, open shelving and continuous rails can help minimize your cabinet expense while maximizing your storage capacity.
