Why did you become a designer?

I became a designer because I have a Bachelor’s in Fine Art and it was the closest profession to a studio artist that I could think of that would allow me to have a successful career.  Designing spaces became a great outlet for all of the creative inclinations that I had in my college art classes.  Designing kitchens gives me the ability to think creatively and see a real, tangible result from something that starts on paper with just some measurements.

How would you describe your personal design style?

“Mid-Century Junkyard Chic.” I will take all castoffs from family and friends and make them work in my house with a little paint and creativity. I won’t admit to how many pieces of furniture in my house were found on the side of the road.

What does your dream kitchen look like?

Describe a recent design challenge you were confronted with and how you solved it.

Actually, one that comes up all the time is taking out an existing closet and making it into more of a featured and functional space.

What is your proudest moment as a designer thus far?

It was probably the first time that I saw a kitchen I had designed actually installed. It was amazing to see something that started from lines on paper and some small samples of wood and stone come to life in a home. It made me realize how important it was for me to understand each client’s taste and needs for their new kitchen. It is something that will affect their life for a long time! I fully understood that what I did had a real impact on peoples lives . . . it make their day to day life better when we do our job well.

What are some of your favorite places to shop for décor or accessories for the home?

Just about anywhere and everywhere. Online, I frequent these websites for furniture and larger accessories:

Thrive

Ballard Designs

Schoolhouse Electric

Rejuvenation

Brick and Mortar? I mainly shop:

Anthroplogie

Homegoods

Target

Thrift stores

West Elm

When it comes to your own home, are you more DIY or HAE (Hire An Expert)?

Most of the time DIY . . . but I know my limits! I can easily put a couple coats of paint on my walls, but I let the professionals handle just about everything else.
